Type or paste your text to count words, characters, sentences and reading time instantly. Free, private, no sign-up.
This free online editor counts words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and pages as you type, and shows your top keywords, reading level, reading time and speaking time. Paste text or upload a .txt file and the numbers update instantly. Your draft is saved in your browser, so you can close the tab and come back.
Most word counters split text on spaces, which gives wrong numbers for Chinese, Japanese, Thai and other languages written without spaces. This tool uses your browser's Unicode segmentation, so counts stay accurate across scripts, including emoji and accented letters.
Use it for essays with word limits, SEO titles and meta descriptions, social posts, captions, SMS messages and any text where length matters. Select part of your text to count only that selection, apply case changes to it, or listen to your writing read back to catch mistakes.
It counts as you type. Words are split with your browser's built-in Unicode segmenter, so it also works for Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Arabic, Hindi and other languages, not only space-separated text.
No. Counting runs in your browser and your text never leaves your device. Your draft is kept only in your own browser storage so a refresh does not lose it, and Clear removes it. Dictation is the one exception: it uses your browser's speech recognition, which may send audio to your browser vendor.
Reading time uses about 238 words per minute for most languages and about 400 characters per minute for Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute and handwriting time about 13 words per minute.
For mostly English text it shows the Flesch-Kincaid school grade needed to understand the text, plus the Flesch Reading Ease score from 0 (very hard) to 100 (very easy). Scores of 60 to 70 suit a general audience.
Flow shows the rhythm of your sentences. Each block is one sentence, coloured by length. A mix of short, medium and long sentences scores higher than many sentences of the same length. Click a block to jump to that sentence.
They show how much of each limit your text uses, for example 280 for an X post, 160 for a meta description and 60 for a page title. A meter turns red when you go over.
Keyword density is how often a word or phrase appears compared with your total words. Switch between single words, two-word and three-word phrases to spot overused terms.
The main character count includes spaces and line breaks. The details panel also shows the count without spaces, which some assignments and translation jobs use.
An X post allows 280 characters, but every link counts as 23 and most Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2. The X meter applies those rules.
One SMS holds 160 characters in GSM-7, or 70 if it contains any Unicode character such as an emoji or Arabic letter. Longer messages split into segments of 153 or 67 characters. The details panel shows your segment count.
