About the Silence Audio Generator

The Silence Generator creates a file of pure digital silence of any length from 10 milliseconds to an hour. Use it to pad recordings, fill gaps in video edits, create spacer tracks for CD burning, meet minimum-length upload rules or make placeholders.

Choose the sample rate and mono or stereo so the silence matches the rest of your project exactly.

How the Silence Audio Generator works

Silence is a buffer of zero-valued samples: duration × sample rate samples per channel. A 16-bit stereo WAV uses 4 bytes per sample frame plus a 44-byte header. Note that constant-bitrate MP3 does not shrink silence — frames are fixed-size, so a minute of silence is still about 1 MB at 128 kbps — and MP3 encoders add a short delay and padding, so use WAV when the length must be exact.

Tips for the best results

  • Match the sample rate of your project (44.1 or 48 kHz).
  • Use WAV for exact lengths; MP3 adds encoder padding.

Frequently asked questions

Is digital silence really silent?

Yes — all samples are zero.

How big is an hour of silence?

About 635 MB as 16-bit 44.1 kHz stereo WAV.

Why would I need a silent audio file?

Common uses: padding the start/end of a track to an exact length, inserting a deliberate pause between tracks in a playlist, or testing how software handles empty audio.
