The classic "fill down" problem from exported reports
Reports exported from many systems only print a category or group label on the first row of each group, leaving the cells below it blank — readable to a human, useless for filtering or grouping programmatically until those blanks are filled with the value above them. Fill-down handles that in bulk across an entire column.
Fill down versus a fixed default value
Fill down carries the last non-blank value forward, ideal for grouped report exports; a fixed default value is better when blanks genuinely mean "zero" or "none" rather than "same as above."
Can different columns use different fill rules?
Yes — set fill-down for one column and a fixed value for another, or leave some columns' blanks untouched entirely.
What happens if the very first row in a column is blank?
With fill down, it stays blank since there's no prior value yet to carry forward — fill down only propagates a value once one has appeared.
Does this work on numeric columns too?
Yes — fill down and fixed-value filling both work on any column regardless of whether its values are text or numbers.
