Auto-Index Generator
Select a folder and automatically generate an alphabetical index of every file inside — ready to export as an HTML index page or Markdown list.
How to use Auto-Index Generator
- Start by providing the required input: Select a folder to index.
- No additional settings need to be configured.
- This tool has no separate run button; its results update as you add or change the input.
- Review the results, then choose an output control: Export as HTML, Export as Markdown.
Building a file index without typing out every filename
Documenting what's in a folder — for a shared drive, a project handoff, an archive — usually means manually typing out a list of filenames, which goes stale the moment a file is added or removed. Generating the index directly from a real folder keeps it accurate and current every time you regenerate it.
HTML versus Markdown export
HTML export gives you a standalone, clickable index page you can drop into a folder as its own index.html; Markdown export is better for pasting into a wiki, README, or documentation system that renders Markdown natively.
Are the links in the generated index clickable?
Yes — each entry links to its file using the file's relative path, so the index works as a real navigable page once placed alongside the actual files.
How are files organized in the index?
Grouped by their containing subfolder, with files listed alphabetically within each group.
Indexing document headings instead of files?
Use the Content Index / TOC Generator instead, which builds a table of contents from Markdown headings rather than a file listing.
