A table of contents without manually tracking every heading
Long Markdown documents benefit enormously from a table of contents, but keeping one updated by hand as headings are added, removed, or reordered is tedious and easy to let drift out of sync with the actual document. Scanning the document for headings and generating the TOC fresh each time keeps it accurate.
Why heading levels control the TOC's indentation
A level-2 heading (##) nests one level deeper than a level-1 heading (#) in the generated TOC, mirroring the document's actual structure — so the table of contents visually reflects the document's real hierarchy, not just a flat list of headings.
Does this work on documents that aren't Markdown?
It specifically looks for Markdown-style # headings — plain text without that syntax won't produce a TOC since there's nothing to detect.
Are the generated links functional?
Yes — each TOC entry links to a slug generated from its heading text, matching the anchor format most Markdown renderers (including GitHub) generate automatically.
Want a file-listing index instead of a heading-based TOC?
Use Auto-Index Generator (the folder version) instead, which indexes files in a folder rather than headings in a document.
