1080p is the standard for good quality on laptops, TVs and phones. Downscaling from 4K to 1080p typically cuts file size by more than half and is what most platforms use for their main playback quality.
Here "1080p" means the shorter side of the picture becomes 1080 pixels: a landscape video becomes 1920 by 1080 and a vertical one is 1080 pixels wide. The aspect ratio is preserved, so nothing is stretched. If your video is already smaller than 1080p, it is left alone unless you tick the enlarge option.

Current Chrome, Edge and Safari (16.4 or newer, including iPhone and iPad) work best because they include the WebCodecs video engine. Recent Firefox versions work for many files. Older browsers fall back to a much slower real-time mode or may not work at all.
What is the exact size of 1080p?
For a 16:9 landscape video it is 1920×1080. For other shapes the shorter side is 1080 pixels and the other side follows the aspect ratio.
Will resizing to 1080p make the file smaller?
Only if your video is larger than 1080p (for example 4K). A 1080p video resized to 1080p is unchanged.
Why is it fast, or slow, on my device?
Speed depends on whether your device has hardware video encoding, which most phones and laptops from the last several years do. A short phone clip usually finishes in seconds. Very long, 4K or high-frame-rate videos take longer, and the progress bar shows an estimate.
