About the Online Metronome

The Online Metronome keeps perfect time for practice, rehearsal and recording, from 20 to 300 BPM, with 1–12 beats per bar, eighth, triplet or sixteenth-note subdivisions, accented downbeats and four click sounds. A tempo trainer gradually speeds you up bar by bar for building speed safely.

The beat is scheduled on the audio clock — not on JavaScript timers — so it stays steady even when the page is busy; the visuals follow the audio, not the other way round.

How the Online Metronome works

Clicks are scheduled with the classic lookahead scheduler: a 25 ms timer looks 120 ms ahead and schedules oscillator bursts at exact Web Audio times, so timing jitter from the main thread cannot affect the sound. The visual ring is driven from the same queue of scheduled times. The tempo trainer adds a BPM step every N bars until a maximum.

Frequently asked questions

What does Largo or Allegro mean?

Italian tempo markings; the tool shows the marking for your BPM.

Is it accurate?

Timing is sample-scheduled; Bluetooth latency may offset what you hear.

Why does it use 'precise scheduling' instead of just a simple timer?

A plain JavaScript timer can drift or stutter if the browser tab is busy with other work. This schedules each click slightly ahead of time using the Web Audio API's own clock, which keeps timing accurate even under load.

Can I download this as an audio file instead?

Yes — for a downloadable click track file (to import into a DAW, for example), use the Click Track Generator instead.
