About the Vocal Boost EQ

The Vocal Boost EQ is a voice-specific equaliser: it removes low rumble, reduces boxy “mud” around 250 Hz, lifts the presence band where speech becomes intelligible, adds air at the top and softly de-esses harsh sibilance. It is the same recipe used in many podcast and broadcast chains, in five sliders.

Each control targets one well-known voice problem, so you fix what you hear — thin, muddy, dull, harsh — instead of guessing at frequencies.

How the Vocal Boost EQ works

Signal path: second-order (12 dB/octave) Butterworth high-pass (0–200 Hz) → peaking cut at 250 Hz (Q 1.2) → peaking presence boost at 1.5–5 kHz (Q 1) → peaking dip at 6.8 kHz (Q 3) → high shelf at 10 kHz. All stages are Web Audio biquads, so the live preview and exported file match exactly.

Tips for the best results

  • Male voices: presence 2–3 kHz; female voices: 3–4 kHz.
  • Always high-pass at 70–100 Hz to remove rumble and plosive thumps.
  • Cut mud by 2–4 dB first — it often makes boosting presence unnecessary.
  • For noisy recordings combine with the Noise Reducer.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a de-esser?

A static one — it dips a fixed band. A dynamic de-esser reacts to sibilance.

Does it replace compression?

No; use Improve Voice Quality to add compression and loudness.

Is this specifically for podcasts?

It's tuned as a general starting point for spoken word — works well for podcasts, voiceovers, and dialogue that needs to sit clearly in a mix.
