Batch renaming that a simple find-and-replace can't handle
Some renaming patterns need more power than literal text substitution — extracting a number from IMG_0042.jpg and reusing it as photo-0042.jpg, for instance, requires capturing part of the original name and reinserting it. Full regex support with capture groups handles exactly this, previewed before anything is actually renamed.
Reading capture groups in the replacement
Parentheses in the pattern create numbered capture groups — $1, $2, and so on — that you can reuse anywhere in the replacement string, letting you restructure a filename rather than just substitute part of it.
What happens to files that don't match the pattern?
They're left with their original name and flagged "No match" in the preview, so nothing is accidentally renamed based on a pattern that didn't actually apply to it.
Is the pattern applied to the full filename, including extension?
Yes — your pattern can match and restructure the extension too if needed, giving full control over the final name.
Don't need regex — just simple rename patterns?
The Bulk File Renamer offers find/replace, numbering, and case conversion without needing regex syntax.
