The frame is read from the video data at its full resolution and then scaled to the size you choose, so a 1080p video gives a genuinely sharp 1280×720 thumbnail. If the shape does not match, you can fill the frame by cropping, fit it with bars, or use a blurred background.

Current Chrome, Edge and Safari (16.4 or newer, including iPhone and iPad) work best because they include the WebCodecs video engine. Recent Firefox versions work for many files. Older browsers fall back to a much slower real-time mode or may not work at all.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
1280×720 pixels (16:9), which is the size offered here by default. YouTube accepts JPG, PNG and WebP, and asks for files under 2 MB.
Can I capture several options?
