Change or check the DPI of any image
DPI (dots per inch) is a number saved inside an image file that tells printers and design programs how large to print it. A 3000 pixel wide photo is 10 inches wide at 300 DPI and about 41 inches wide at 72 DPI. The pixels themselves do not change, which is why a plain DPI change is instant and loses no quality.
This image DPI changer shows the DPI currently stored in your file, lets you set 72, 96, 150, 300, 600 or any other value, and saves the file again. For JPG and PNG files it edits only the DPI information in the file, so the picture data is byte-for-byte unchanged. If you need exact print dimensions, such as a 6 × 4 inch photo at 300 DPI, use the resize mode and the tool resamples the image to the right number of pixels.
Many online forms, print shops and publishers ask for "300 DPI". In most cases they mean the file should carry that value and have enough pixels for the print size. If your image is small, stretching it to a bigger size will not make it sharper, so start with the highest-resolution original you have.
How it works
Add your image
The tool reads the DPI already saved in the file, if there is one.
Pick the DPI
Choose 72, 150, 300 or 600, or type a value. Use "Resize to print size" if you need exact inches or centimetres.
Download
Save the file. JPG and PNG are updated without re-compressing.
Frequently asked questions
Does changing DPI change the quality of my image?
Not when you only change the DPI value of a JPG or PNG. The pixels stay exactly as they are, and only the print-size information in the file changes. Quality changes only if you resize to a new pixel size or pick another file format.
Will a 300 DPI image look better on screen?
No. Screens show images by pixels and ignore DPI. DPI matters for printing and for programs that place the image at a physical size.
What is the difference between DPI and PPI?
PPI (pixels per inch) describes images and screens, DPI (dots per inch) describes printers. Image files store one number, and in everyday use people call it DPI.
Can I make a low-resolution image 300 DPI for printing?
You can set the value to 300, but the print will only be as sharp as the number of pixels allows. A 600×400 pixel image at 300 DPI prints at 2×1.3 inches. To print larger without blur you need a higher-resolution original.
Which formats can store DPI?
JPG and PNG both can, and this tool edits them directly. WebP and other formats are converted to PNG or JPG first, because they do not reliably carry a DPI value.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The file is edited in your browser and never sent to a server.
