Convert digital storage between bits, bytes and both unit families used in computing: the decimal (SI) units KB, MB, GB, TB and PB based on powers of 1,000, and the binary (IEC) units KiB, MiB, GiB, TiB and PiB based on powers of 1,024. Seeing both explains why a "1 TB" drive shows up as about 931 GiB in Windows.
Moving files over a network? Use the data transfer rate converter for Mbps and MB/s, and the number base converter for binary and hex.
Compare advertised (decimal) drive capacities with what your operating system reports (often binary).
Convert file sizes and quotas between MB, GB and TB for plans and backups.
Work in bytes, KiB and MiB for memory, buffers and file limits.
1 KB = 1,000 bytes, but 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. The gap grows with size: 1 TB is about 0.909 TiB. Windows shows binary sizes with decimal labels (GB), macOS and most drive makers use decimal.
A byte is 8 bits. Lowercase b is a bit and uppercase B is a byte, so 100 Mb is 12.5 MB.
In decimal (SI) units there are 1,000 MB in 1 GB. In binary units there are 1,024 MiB in 1 GiB.
Manufacturers count 1 TB as 10¹² bytes, while operating systems like Windows report in binary units: 10¹² bytes is about 931 GiB.
1,000 in the SI standard (KB). 1,024 bytes is a kibibyte (KiB).
Eight bits make one byte.
