Fuel economy is expressed in different ways around the world: miles per gallon in the US and UK, kilometers per liter in parts of Asia and South America, and liters per 100 km in Europe, Canada and Australia. This converter handles all of them, including the inverse relationship between "distance per fuel" and "fuel per distance".
Also check the volume converter for fuel quantities and the length converter for distances.
Compare a US-market car rated in mpg with a European one rated in L/100 km.
Convert to km/L or mpg to estimate how far a tank or a journey will go.
Check advertised consumption figures for imported vehicles, which may use a different unit or gallon size.
With mpg and km/L a higher number means better efficiency; with L/100 km a lower number is better. That is why the two are inversely related.
A UK (imperial) gallon is about 20% bigger than a US gallon, so 40 mpg (UK) is only about 33 mpg (US).
Divide 235.215 by the mpg (US) value. For example, 30 mpg ≈ 7.84 L/100 km. For UK mpg, divide 282.481 by the value.
The UK gallon is 4.546 L and the US gallon is 3.785 L, so the same car has a higher mpg figure in the UK.
A typical modern petrol car uses roughly 6 to 8 L/100 km; efficient hybrids can be below 4.5 L/100 km.
A value of 0 mpg or km/L means infinite fuel per distance, so the L/100 km result is shown as ∞.
