Convert network and disk speeds between bits per second and bytes per second. Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps), while browsers and file managers show megabytes per second (MB/s), which is 8 times smaller. This tool converts every combination, including binary MiB/s and GiB/s.
Estimate download times by combining it with the data storage converter and the time converter.
Find the real download speed in MB/s for a plan advertised in Mbps or Gbps.
Compare SSD, USB, SATA and Ethernet throughput listed in different units.
Match bitrates in Mbps to bandwidth and file sizes for planning and encoding.
MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8. A 100 Mbps connection tops out at 12.5 MB/s, and a 1 Gbps connection at 125 MB/s.
Protocol overhead, Wi-Fi conditions and server limits mean real transfers are usually 5 to 20% below the theoretical rate.
Divide megabits per second by 8. For example, 200 Mbps = 25 MB/s.
One gigabit per second is 1,000 megabits per second in the SI convention used by network vendors.
Divide the file size in MB by the speed in MB/s. A 1,000 MB file at 12.5 MB/s takes 80 seconds.
MB/s uses 1,000,000 bytes and MiB/s uses 1,048,576 bytes, so 1 MiB/s is about 1.0486 MB/s.
